For a business that offers a range of equipment to rent, Christchurch company Smiths Hire face the on-going challenge of that equipment being stolen, not returned or simply going missing while out on hire. “They're not like a vehicle that has alarms or can be locked up,” says owner Wayne Smith. “There’s a lot of theft going on, it’s a big problem in our business.”
The equipment that can be hired includes diggers, excavators, and other equipment that is often sitting on a building site. “We needed something to guard against theft as well as being able to locate them,” Wayne explains. “We’ve had gear go missing. Security was a big part of why we were looking for a GPS solution in the first place.”
When considering ways to resolve this problem, Wayne says that the business considered a few GPS tracking options. Fleetpin was the one that ticked all the boxes. “They reached out to us and we got to try a couple of options,” Wayne recalls. “They really seemed to work well, so we just kept adding to them.”
The GPS devices are installed on most of Smiths Hire’s equipment, and Wayne says he and his staff are able to monitor them using their smartphones. “Really easy and convenient to use, because we've always got our phones with us, so we know all the time where our equipment is too,” he says. “It’s saved us a couple of times already. It’s been stolen or just not returned, and we can just locate it and go and get it, so it's really benefitted our business in a big way. Our insurance company likes it as well.”
Wayne says that the service he’s experienced with Fleetpin has been exceptional. Not only that, but the pricing structure has worked well with their business. “There's no fixed contract, we just come and go as we please with Fleetpin ,” he says. “The devices are all interchangeable and they're good guys to work with.”
Wayne describes the GPS solution as a good, value-for-money tracking device, and says that business owners can't go past Fleetpin for their level of service. “We've passed their name on to a few of our clients, wouldn't hesitate to recommend them,” he says.
